Role in the Scientific Revolution

Galileo's Discoveries

People that Galileo Influenced

Galileo's Struggles

Johannes Kepler

Isaac Newton

  • Many people were inspired by his work, but one of the famous scientists were:

    • Johannes Kepler was inspired by Galileo’s telescope

    • Isaac Newton was inspired by Galileo’s work and confidence

    • Nicolaus Copernicus was inspired by Galileo's support and work on heliocentric theory

  • Other Scientists that were impacted by Galileo:

    • Giordano Bruno

    • Nicole Oresme

    • Aristotle

    • Avicenna

    • Robert Boyle

    • Evangelista Torricelli

    • Vincenzo Viviani

  • On January 7th, 1610, Galileo discovered the four moons of Jupiter: lo, Europa, Callisto, and Ganymede

  • When Galileo was looking through his renovated telescope, he noticed three small stars near Jupiter

  • The next evening he observed again, however, the tree stars were on the other side of the planet

  •  Over the next few weeks, he watched these stars and later named them, The Medicean Stars

  • At first, Galileo didn't know what these "stars" were, or why they were always found near the king of planets

  • But Galileo observed them for a long time and soon it became clear that the motion of these objects followed Kepler's laws

  • The same laws that described the motion of the planets around the Sun

  • Therefore, he published his discovery of the four moons

  • Other Galileo's discoveries are:

    • The Principle of Pendulum

    • The Law of Falling Bodies

    • The Telescope (30x magnification)

    • The Thermoscope (earlier version of thermometer)

    • The Phases of Venus

    • The Discovery of Sunspots

  • After Galileo published his discovery of the four moons of Jupiter, many scholars attacked him because his observations contradicted ancient views about the world

  • The Catholic Church condemned him because it challenged the Christian teachings

  • In 1663, Galileo was tried before the Inquisition, and for the rest of his life he was kept under house arrest

  • He agreed to state publicly in court that the Earth stands motionless at the center of the universe

  • However, at the end of his speech, he muttered, "And yet it moves"

  • Galileo Galilei played a huge role in the Scientific Revolution

  • He provided evidence to support that the Earth revolves around the sun

  • Invented an improved telescope

  • Was disagreed with by religious leaders

  • Influenced many important scientific figures

  • He got a lot of admiration from people for his work, including admiration from Newton
